About the Roman Numeral Converter

The Roman numeral converter works both ways: type a number from 1 to 3999 to get its numeral, or a numeral to get its number. It splits the answer by thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones so you can check it, catches numerals written the wrong way, and converts dates for tattoos and engravings.

How to use it

  1. 1 Type a number, like 2027, or a numeral, like MMXXVII.
  2. 2 Read the answer and how it is built, then copy it.
  3. 3 For a date, pick it in the date box and choose the order and the separator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write 2026 and 2027 in Roman numerals?

2026 is MMXXVI: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6). 2027 is MMXXVII: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VII (7).

How do Roman numerals work?

Seven letters stand for numbers: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Add them from left to right, largest first. A smaller letter before a larger one is taken away instead, in six pairs only: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), and CM (900).

Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?

The standard rule never repeats a letter more than three times, so 4 is one less than five: IV. You will still see IIII on many clock faces, a tradition kept for balance with VIII on the other side.

What is the largest Roman numeral?

With the standard letters, MMMCMXCIX (3999). Larger numbers used a bar over a letter to multiply it by 1,000, so V with a bar is 5,000, but there was never one agreed system for this.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Romans had no numeral for zero. Medieval writers sometimes used the word nulla, or the letter N, for it.

How do I write a date in Roman numerals?

Convert the day, month, and year separately and join them with dots or another separator. 23 October 2026 is XXIII.X.MMXXVI in day-month-year order, or X.XXIII.MMXXVI in the US month-day-year order.
