Assumes the rate stays the same. When interest compounds less often than monthly, each month earns the matching share of the period’s interest. DPS and FDR: instalments go in at the start of each month; source tax is 10% of the interest with proof of a filed return and 15% without; excise duty comes off once a year on the year’s highest balance, free up to Tk 4,00,000. Banks round and credit interest in their own ways, and renewed FDRs earn the rate of the renewal day. Rules last checked 26 October 2026 against the Finance Act 2026. It also has a DPS calculator and an FDR calculator for Bangladesh banks that take off the 10% or 15% source tax and the yearly excise duty, so you see the money you actually take home.

Frequently asked questions

How is DPS interest calculated in Bangladesh?

You pay the instalment at the start of each month and the bank adds interest to the whole balance, usually every month or every quarter. A Tk 2,000 DPS at 9% for 5 years with monthly compounding grows to about Tk 1,51,980 before tax: Tk 1,20,000 you paid and about Tk 31,980 interest. Banks print their own maturity charts, so set the compounding to match yours.

Is there tax on DPS interest?

Yes. The bank deducts source tax from the interest: 10% if you show proof that you filed a tax return (PSR), and 15% if you do not. On the example above that is about Tk 3,198 at 10%. You can count the tax deducted against your income tax for the year.

What is excise duty on a DPS account?

Banks take excise duty once a year from every account whose balance went above Tk 4,00,000 at any time that year. It is Tk 150 up to Tk 5 lakh, Tk 500 up to Tk 10 lakh, Tk 3,000 up to Tk 50 lakh, and more above that. Smaller DPS accounts pay none.

What happens if I break my DPS early?

Most banks pay a lower rate, often the savings rate or nothing at all in the first year, if you close a DPS before maturity, and some charge a fee. This calculator shows a DPS kept to the end; ask your bank for its early closure rules.

Does DPS get an income tax rebate?

Yes. Up to Tk 1,20,000 a year paid into a DPS counts as an allowed investment for the investment tax rebate in Bangladesh. Use the Bangladesh income tax calculator to see what it saves you.

How up to date are the tax and excise rates?

They were last checked in October 2026 against the Income Tax Act 2023 and the Finance Act 2026, which raised the excise-free balance to Tk 4,00,000 from 1 July 2026. Both can change in each June budget.
